How it works

From application to the water

  1. Apply using the program application. A parent or guardian applies for anyone under 18.
  2. We review eligibility and confirm a place. Funded places are awarded on published criteria.
  3. Before your first session, complete the participation waiver and emergency information, and the optional photo permission.
  4. Sail.
  5. After each session, share a short reflection so we can track what you’re learning.

Some programs are still being launched. Applying now puts you on the list, and we’ll contact you when a place is available.

Eligibility

Who can apply

Programs are open to youth and adults. Funded places are free to participants and awarded on these published criteria, with priority for those who face barriers to the water:

  • The cost of sailing is a barrier for the applicant or their family.
  • No access to a boat or a club.
  • No connections in the sport.
  • First in the family to sail.
  • Disability, illness or hardship has made sailing hard to reach.
  • Referred by a school, youth group or community partner.
  • Commitment to attend, learn and progress.

No experience is needed. A parent or guardian applies for anyone under 18. Places depend on program capacity, safety requirements and funding. Applicants are considered without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or sexual orientation. Directors, officers and staff of Impact Sailing Foundation and its fiscal sponsor, and members of their households, are not eligible for funded places. Funded places are approved by the fiscal sponsor.

Parent or guardian (required if participant is under 18)
For a participant under 18, we email this application to the parent or guardian to review and sign before it is submitted. Use the parent’s own email, not the participant’s.
Where you are, and where you want to go Access isn’t only about having a boat. Many people can get on the water but can’t get coaching, a team, or racing at the level they want.

Funded places are awarded only on the published criteria: commitment to learning, the gap between where you are and where you want to go, financial need, availability and your written answers.

Emergency contacts
Health and safety

Participant agreement, release of liability and assumption of risk. In exchange for being allowed to take part in Impact Sailing programs and activities (“Activities”), the participant and, for anyone under 18, the parent or guardian signing below agree as follows.

1. Risks. Sailing and related activities on and around boats, docks and the water involve inherent risks, including drowning, falls, being struck by booms, lines or equipment, weather and sea conditions, collisions, cold, heat and sun exposure, and serious injury or death. Some risks cannot be eliminated without changing the nature of the activity. I understand these risks and voluntarily choose to participate.

2. Rules. I agree to wear a life jacket when required, follow the instructions of the captain, coaches and staff, follow safety rules and the code of conduct, and not participate under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The captain may end my participation at any time for safety reasons.

3. Release. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, including general maritime law, I release, waive and agree not to sue the Released Parties for any injury, loss or damage arising from the Activities, including claims based on the Released Parties’ ordinary negligence. “Released Parties” means Impact Sailing Foundation Inc.; Spectrum Sailing, Inc. and any other fiscal sponsor of the program; any program provider or operator, including Best Boating Supplies LLC; the owners and operators of any vessel used in the Activities; Shane Kilberg; and each of their directors, officers, employees, coaches, captains and volunteers. This release does not apply to gross negligence or intentional misconduct, or where the law does not allow it.

4. Medical treatment. I authorize the Released Parties to obtain emergency medical care for the participant if needed and agree to be responsible for its cost. I confirm the emergency and medical information I provide is accurate.

5. Minors. If the participant is under 18, the parent or guardian signing below gives permission to participate, agrees to these terms on the parent’s own behalf, and agrees to them on the minor’s behalf to the extent the law allows.

6. General. This agreement is governed by Maryland law and applicable federal maritime law. If any part is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. It applies to all Activities for 12 months from the date signed.

Optional

Photo & video permission

Photos and stories help others find their way onto the water. This permission is optional and never affects participation.

Choose one

I give Impact Sailing Foundation Inc., Spectrum Sailing, Inc. and the program’s providers permission to photograph and record the participant during program activities, and to use those images, recordings and any quotes I provide, as chosen above, on websites, social media, printed materials and fundraising and grant materials, without payment. I may withdraw permission at any time by email for future uses; materials already published may not be recallable. For a participant under 18, a parent or guardian must sign.
